Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a manual therapy focussing on the musculoskeletal system and nervous system. Our aim as Chiropractors is to ensure proper function and movement in the whole musculoskeletal system allowing for reduced pain, improved range of motion, increased flexibility, and improved overall health and wellbeing, which in turn allows the nervous system to function at its optimum.

Chiropractic Care at Meridian Health and Wellbeing

The body is highly adaptable.  Joint dysfunctions or restricted movement in the musculoskeletal system, which can be caused by daily habits, repetitive strain or even injury, can result in compensations patterns developing in the musculoskeletal system, further hindering overall function. Pain can develop as a result of these altered biomechanics within the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.

Chiropractors are registered, primary health care practitioners that work with their patients to provide evidence informed, patient centred care. Alongside Chiropractic adjustments, joint mobilisations and soft tissue release techniques, Chiropractors will often discuss exercise, lifestyle factors and habits that can help prevent future occurrences of pain and dysfunction.

Chiropractic can help support patients experiencing headaches arising from the neck, joint pains including those of the knee and hip as a result of osteoarthritis, acute and chronic low back pain, mechanical neck pain, migraine prevention, sciatica and generalised aches and pains.

Chiropractors are regulated by the General Chiropractic Council and undergo extensive specialist training to meet high standards of education, patient safety, and professional practice. This helps ensure patients receive safe, evidence-informed, and professional care.

The McTimoney Technique

The McTimoney technique, developed by John McTimoney over 50 years ago, is taught at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Oxfordshire, as well as campuses in Manchester, Madrid, and Hong Kong.

McTimoney Chiropractic is widely recognised for its gentle, low force, whole body approach. Adjustments are precise and focus on speed avoiding forceful thrusts, making treatment suitable for people of all ages, from babies and children through to older adults.

Your chiropractor will always begin by discussing your reason for attending the clinic, alongside your medical history and general health. A thorough examination will then be carried out, which may include orthopaedic and neurological testing, assessment of movement and posture, and evaluation of nervous system function.

Following your examination, your chiropractor will explain their findings clearly and discuss whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for you. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have. If you decide to proceed with care, with consent, an individualised treatment plan will be created around your needs, goals, and capabilities.

If further investigation or alternative treatment is needed, your chiropractor can, with your permission, work alongside your GP or other healthcare provider to arrange an appropriate referral.

Pregnancy Care

Pregnancy brings significant changes to the body, both physically and physiologically. As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts and the musculoskeletal system adapts to accommodate these changes, sometimes placing additional stress on the joints, muscles, and ligaments of the spine and pelvis.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy focuses on supporting balance and mobility within the pelvis and spine, helping the body adapt more comfortably to the physical demands of pregnancy. At the clinic, we use gentle techniques including the Webster Technique alongside the McTimoney approach, both of which are tailored specifically to the individual needs of each patient.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recognise manual therapy as part of the management approach for pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain. However, chiropractic care during pregnancy is not solely focused on pain relief; it also aims to support movement, function, posture, and overall wellbeing throughout pregnancy.

Treatment is always adapted to your stage of pregnancy and your comfort levels.

Paediatric care

Similarly to adults, babies and children can experience joint dysfunctions and restricted movement, impacting overall function of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system. From bumps and tumbles in early childhood, including the birthing process itself, to carrying heavy back packs, time spent using devices, Chiropractic care can support these growing bodies with any musculoskeletal discomfort they may be experiencing.

Treatment is adapted to meet the age and stage of the paediatric patient; allowing plenty of time for play and to gain trust.
